01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Just off the Sanjo-kai Shotengai shopping arcade, ran Hotei welcomes guests for tea and casual meals inside a preserved machiya townhouse dating from the Meiji era. Furnished with substantial wooden sofas, tatami mats, and open views onto an inner courtyard garden, the interior carries a relaxed mood reminiscent of the Taisho Roman aesthetic.
For a daytime meal, the homemade curry is a regular cafe staple. Rather than the sharp heat typical of some Japanese curry roux, the sauce presents well-defined spice notes tempered into a smooth, approachable profile. Other comforting, Western-leaning fare includes tender meatballs simmered in tomato sauce—rich yet clean in finish—and a daily soup.
Stone-ground matcha takes center stage on the cafe menu, prized for its fragrant aroma and restrained bitterness. Drink choices range from cold matcha smoothies to effervescent sparkling matcha water, accompanied by confections such as matcha cheesecake, tofu cake, and mont blanc.
A hallmark of the shop is its tea ceremony experience led by proprietor Randy Channell Soei, an Urasenke tea professor. Conducted in the seated ryurei style using chairs rather than kneeling on tatami, the sessions feature detailed explanations of traditional etiquette and historical context, giving newcomers an unhurried, accessible entry into tea culture.
Dogs are also welcome at the entrance seating on floor 1, where snacks and meals are available for canine companions. Whether dropping in for a casual pause during a neighborhood walk or reserving ahead for a structured tea session, the space easily accommodates both.
